The aim of the programme is to nurture young professionals with the knowledge and practical skills to develop and implement green and smart technology-driven approaches for a career in the rapidly expanding sector of smart and net-zero carbon city development. This programme provides training in green energy science and smart technology, such as green energy generation, smart energy storage and distribution, smart control systems and IoT, carbon audit, energy audit and energy management. In addition to in-class learning and projects, students have experiential learning opportunities, such as internship and overseas study exchange. Courses are also available to help students to prepare for professional certification examinations. Students graduating from this programme are well equipped and highly competitive for careers as green energy and smart technology professionals, e.g., in energy audit and consulting, energy/utility companies, green/smart building design and management, smart transportation and energy conservation. The basic science training also prepares students for further studies in science and engineering, or careers in technology innovation.

In addition to in-class learning and projects, students have experiential learning opportunities, such as internship and overseas study exchange. Courses are also available to help students to prepare for professional certification examinations.

  • Participation in international events/conferences

Students can obtain sponsorship to participate in international events/conferences related to green energy or smart technology.

  • Internship

Students are encouraged to take part in the internship. In the past few years, our students have gained valuable working experience in major corporations and government departments, such as CLP, HK Electric, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Shun Hing Engineering Contracting Co. Ltd., and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

  • Summer Research

Students can participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship programme to conduct applied research with stipend during the summer.

Upon completion of this programme, graduates are well equipped and highly competitive for careers as green energy and smart technology professionals, e.g., in energy audit and consulting, energy/utility companies, green/smart building design and management, smart transportation and energy conservation. These jobs will not only be available locally, but also in the Greater Bay Area and beyond. Training in smart technology will enable them to be versatile enough to be engaged in developing simple hardware and software for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Many new opportunities are now available in SMEs thanks to the establishment of the Innovation and Technology Bureau (ITB). Several start-up companies have been so far established in the Department of Physics alone, and some of them are seeking our graduates as their employees.
