Founded as the first and unique undergraduate programme in Hong Kong to offering a broad liberal arts education, HUM re-dedicated itself to training students to think critically and creatively, to write logically and speak confidently, to sympathize with humanity, and to appreciate life.  

Our teaching staff profile includes renowned scholars and emerging young ones.  Our programme continues to be distinguished by the three pillars of interdisciplinarity, bilingual teaching and learning, and cross-culturalism.   Based on these unique strengths, our programme is marked by three Cs:

  • “Creative”: student of Humanities will develop and defend the freedom of mind
  • “Cultural”: they will learn both classical and contemporary cultures
  • “Critical”: they will appreciate diverse perspectives

Concentrations Offered

  • Group A: Media Studies and Creative Practice
  • Group B: Cultures in Changing Environments

  • Introduce students to the interdisciplinary Humanities studies, involving multiple approaches to the diverse subjects studied within the Humanities: cultural studies, gender studies, ethnic studies, literature, language, history, philosophy, film and fine arts;
  • Prepare students for graduate study in the Humanities and related fields,
  • Examine the traditional and contemporary culture of China, Asia, the West, and the world through the study of selected Humanities texts:
  • Prepare   students   entering   the   work    force   with   the   reasoning,   expressive.  and interpersonal skills that will allow them to contribute to their professions; and  
  • Emphasis the intellectual skills of independent thought and judgment, creative and critical thinking, self-awareness, and commitment.

The Humanities Programme provides students with opportunities to study abroad in order to expand their educational and cultural horizons. Previously, our Summer Study Tour visited Germany, Taiwan and China.

Every year, many students spend one semester or a year in overseas universities, and they invariably come back with unforgettable experiences as well as a newly-gained sense of confidence. They may go to a wide variety of places for exchange, such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Norway, Estonia, Finland, Denmark, France, Sweden and the USA.

Graduates take up careers in the fields of education, business, management, public relations, media, publishing, creative industries and the civil service.
