Notes for elective subjects:

1) One of the electives must be any Category A subjects (excluding Extended Part of Mathematics (Module 1 or Module 2));

    a) Category A subjects (including Extended Part of Mathematics (Module 1 or Module 2));
    b) Category B (Applied Learning) subjects with "Attained with Distinction (I)" or above;
    c) Category C (Other Language) subjects at Grade C or above.

Remarks on other requirements:

1) Candidates are required to submit a portfolio for assessment. Shortlisted candidates are required to submit practical tests and attend the interview. Programme Description

Programme Vision
Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Visual Arts programme celebrates the interdisciplinary intersections within art, design and media in between. Recent developments have introduced new processes, technology and situations that have resulted in an expanded notion of artistic practices beyond the traditional ways of engaging with and learning about the visual arts. The Academy considers all creative disciplines as equally valuable outlets for creative ideas and prepares its students to think, act and respond creatively to the circumstances around them.

Teaching Philosophy
The Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Visual Arts Programme at the Academy of Visual Arts is a professional degree that focuses on intensive practice-led work in the visual arts supported by a programme in General Education. It emphasises creativity, versatility, and intelligent articulation, thus enabling its graduates to enter professional, studio-based careers in such fields as studio arts, design, and/or craft after earning the degree. Our BA-students have the opportunity to develop technical competencies, informed aesthetic judgment, and an understanding of the context in which contemporary work is created, rooted in the ever-shifting cultural climate of creative production.


Programme Structure
The Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Visual Arts Programme is a comprehensive study programme in visual arts that incorporates subjects from across the scope of fine arts, design, craft and art theory. As a guiding principle of the programme, students will progress from breadth to depth over the time of study. Accordingly upon entry to the programme and completion of the required introductory courses, all students may choose electives that match with their personal preferences, their talent, and/or professional career intentions. Based on their choices in Year 2 they will further choose their courses in Year 3 and Year 4, thereby gradually developing a focus in their studies, which will finally articulate in one of two available programme concentrations: 

- Studio and Media Arts (SMA); or 
- Craft and Design (CD)

Student Learning Experiences

We require all students of the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Visual Arts programme to undertake a self-organised non-credit-bearing work experience (internship, work placement, or similar) during their time of study. The work experience links classroom theory to professional practice and provides the student with learning experiences beyond the academic programme. Such experiences are invaluable for the student's professional and personal development, giving them the opportunity to experience the wider arenas of the creative and cultural sectors.

Career Opportunities

The majority our graduates are full-time employed, work in their own businesses or as freelancers. Among the full-time/self-employed graduates, the greater part works in the creative and cultural sectors, with a significant proportion also in visual arts education, or in public relations and communication, marketing or research.

Extended Part of Mathematics (Module 1 or Module 2) can be recognised for fulfilment of the second elective requirement.

The Programme will consider Category B subjects (Applied Learning) with “Attained with Distinction (I)” or above for fulfilment of the second elective requirement.

The scores for Category B subjects are converted as follows:

Attained with Distinction (II)=4, Attained with Distinction (I)=3

The Programme will consider Category C subjects (Other Language) at Grade C or above for fulfilment of the second elective requirement.

The scores for Category C subjects are converted as follows:

A=7, B=5.5, C=4, D=2.5, E=1

  1. Upon score calculation and compilation of practical test and interview results, eligible applicants will be given a rank in the Merit Order List to the JUPAS Office. The Merit Order List will be generated according to the priority given to the list of Tie-breakers. During the admissions process, the following are the most commonly used tie-breakers by the programmes offered by the University.

If a programme ranks the tie-breakers as: '1' to 'HKDSE Academic Score', '2' to 'Band', '3' to 'HKDSE Standard + 1 best X Subject Score', applicants with highest HKDSE Academic Score will be ranked first. If there are two applicants having the same HKDSE Academic Score, the one who places the programme in a higher band choice will be ranked higher. If the two applicants are the same on the first 2 tie-breakers, their HKDSE Standard + 1 best X Subject Score will be compared, the one with higher HKDSE Standard + 1 best X Subject Score will be given a higher rank, and so on.

As programmes select students not only on the basis of the HKDSE results, the actual results of the students admitted to each programme may vary from year to year (depending on the overall results achieved by applicants in a particular year, the number of applicants applying to the programme, changes in selection criteria, etc.).
