Programme Description

Biology is the study of living things and their vital processes, where at HKBU the academic staff teaching the programmes have a diverse range of expertise, supported by access to a wide range of state-of-the-art research facilities. Currently, students can choose either Biotechnology or Environmental Science as their major within the programme.


Unique Features

Students will develop an understanding of the theories of biology as well as environmental science by taking courses in the fields of ecology, resource conservation, environmental biotechnology, waste treatment, environmental toxicology and other environmental related courses.  Students will learn practical skills and various management tools for the environmental industry.


Student Learning Experiences

Students can join the Student Exchange Programme and study outside of Hong Kong for one semester or one academic year, with numerous exchange partners located throughout the world.  Moreover, Summer Internship Programme was offered with different agencies such as Ocean Park Conservation Foundation Hong Kong, World Green Organisation, WELLAB Ltd, SUEZ NWS Holdings Ltd / Oscar Bioenergy, Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre Certification Ltd. Department’s overseas summer exchange programme are perfect platforms for students’ exploration on nature and getting relevant hands-on research and working experience.


Career Opportunities

Many of our graduates gain employment after graduation in a range of fields such as biotechnology, biomedical science, environmental technology and management, ecosystem, conservation management, as well as food and environmental hygiene.

The Department also offers opportunities for postgraduate study at MSc, MPhil and PhD level for graduates who have interest in further study.

Associate Degree/ Higher Diploma Students/ Holders

Local final year students or graduates of an Associate Degree/ Higher Diploma programme at an institution recognised by the University are eligible for publicly-funded senior year places.

 

Transfer Students

Transfer students who are currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree or higher degree programmes at a local or non-local university may apply. 

Please note that according to the guidelines of the University Grants Committee (UGC) on inter-institutional transfer of students, repeating of UGC-funded undergraduate study across institutions, irrespective of whether there is a change of programme or discipline, is generally discouraged unless under very exceptional circumstances.
